Don't Call It a Comeback

After several newspaper reports about his death had been published, Mark Twain famously said “Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.” Remember what the media said about the Idaho Republican Party this past summer? They said we were in “disarray” and hopelessly divided. They labeled us as out of touch. And they tried to overwhelm us with negative press coverage. Above all, they said Idaho Republicans had lost their edge and couldn't win. Funny thing is they forgot to check-in with the voters.

All the while, Idaho Republicans stuck to their traditional values: limited government, less spending, lower taxes and a basic respect for private property, personal liberty and the sanctity of life -- as well as a strong commitment to national security and our troops.

Nothing fancy. Nothing difficult to understand. Just time-honored, Constitutional principles that have kept our nation strong – and a lot of hard work out on the campaign trail. We believed in Idaho voters, instead of browbeating them or suggesting they were backward or behind the times, as some liberals did.

After a long, difficult campaign season, the win-loss record is certainly gratifying, especially given the media's gloom-and-doom predictions following the GOP State Convention in June. Turns out that competition is good. It actually strengthened our party. Rather than resting on our laurels, Idaho Republicans dared to be better. And it paid off this fall.

Bucking the national swoon over Barack Obama, Idahoans gave John McCain and Idaho native Sarah Palin a huge 26-point margin of victory in Idaho. Also, the Idaho GOP actually gained a state legislative seat this year – a vast improvement over the seven legislative seats lost to Democrats just two years ago.

The House totals are now 52 Republicans and 18 Democrats. In the Senate, the margin remains 28-7 in favor of Republicans. While we were unable to maintain an all-GOP Congressional delegation – the direct result of Congressman Bill Sali being heavily outspent by national Democrats and their liberal out-of-state allies – Jim Risch ran a nearly flawless campaign to become our next U.S. Senator and join Senator Mike Crapo in representing Idaho.

And don't forget the overwhelming re-election of Mike Simpson to Congress.

Aside from losing more ground in the State Legislature, Idaho Democrats also lost out in the courthouses. Most notably, the Democrats' much-trumpeted plan to take over the Ada County Courthouse was thwarted. Republican Sharon Ullman defeated incumbent Paul Woods, while incumbent Republican Rick Yzagguire easily fended off a challenge from David Langhorst, giving Ada County an all-Republican Commission.

Ada County voters knew where to go to keep their property taxes down, and traditional stronghold counties like Canyon, Kootenai and Bonneville all stayed in the hands of Republicans. Even more important than wins and losses, however, the Idaho Republican Party increased its strength and vitality, adapting to the needs and demands of the future. Change was the clarion call of this year's elections. Leading the way, Idaho's GOP was up to the challenge and all of Idaho will be the better for it.

In Case You Missed It- Statesman calls Idaho Republicans "Old and Lazy"

Dear Idaho Republicans,

In case you missed it, the Idaho Statesman reported today that Idaho Republicans are getting "old" and "lazy".

It is time to show them once again what Idaho Republicans can do.

After discussing Republican efforts in Canyon County and elsewhere in Idaho, the article quotes College of Idaho professor Jasper LiCalzi as saying: "They get lazy and they get old. . .This will be a real test of the Republican organization."

The Democrats' old reliable friend, the Idaho Statesman, is trying desperately to help carry them across the finish line. But these attempts to discourage Idaho Republicans will fail -- just as they always do.

The Idaho Republican Team is organized, energized and ready for victory on November 4.

What the Idaho Statesman and other liberal media outlets don't understand is that the Idaho Republican Party is not about one person; and we are definitely not a top-down organization. Our strength has always come from the grassroots -- rank-and-file Republicans. From the precinct and county level up; that is where our strength lies; garnering one vote at a time.

As Republicans, our drive and determination comes from within. Our belief is in a calling greater than ourselves.
Our motivation stems from a deep concern and conviction about the future of our great nation. That is why we win; because we have no choice but to fight for our children and our grandchildren; to protect what generations before us have fought and died for. That is what drives us as Republicans.

Democrats continue to field candidates that believe the answer is more government, more taxes and more spending.
They say they support the 2nd Amendment, but they support gun control measures. They say they are for balance on natural resource issues, but they support radical, out-of-state environmental groups. They say they are concerned about the economy, but they want to take more money out of our pockets.

The choice for Idahoans in this election is stark: GOP candidates that support core, conservative Republican principlies against the Democrat Party of Barack Obama and his plan to redistribute wealth and grow government; the Republican Party of bold ideas and innovative solutions vs.
the Democrat party with the same old, tired plans to tax and
spend.

It is no mistake that Walt Minnick has publicly support Barack Obama since January; they believe in the same things, and they will both do all they can to help further the liberal agenda of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. While Walt Minnick may be ashamed to admit that he is a Democrat -- or find it politically expedient to pretend to be something else -- he is definitely not a Republican. Let's make sure we get the vote out for Republicans!

The challenge has been issued. They say that we are "old"
and "lazy"; that we are doomed to failure as the coming tide of Barrack Obama and his liberal, "spread the wealth"
Democrats descends upon Idaho. As the reddest-of-the-red states, it is time to once again show that we are up to the test.

I know that each and everyone of us is up to the challenge.
Let us now re-double our efforts and make sure that every Idahoan gets out to vote -- and vote Republican -- on November 4.

Thank you.

In Case You Missed It-UN Pulls for Obama

At the U.N., Many Hope for an Obama Win

By Colum Lynch
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, October 26, 2008; A17

UNITED NATIONS -- There are no "Obama 2008" buttons, banners or T-shirts visible here at U.N. headquarters, but it might be difficult to find a sliver of territory in the United States more enthusiastic over the prospect of the Illinois senator winning the White House...

Obama supporters hail from Russia, Canada, France, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Indonesia and elsewhere. One American employee here seemed puzzled that he was being asked whether Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was even a consideration. "Obama was and is unstoppable," the official said. "Please, God, let him win," he added.

"It would be hard to find anybody, I think, at the U.N. who would not believe that Obama would be a considerable improvement over any other alternative," said William H. Luers, executive director of the United Nations Association. "It's been a bad eight years, and there is a lot of bad feeling over it."

Conservatives who are skeptical of the United Nations said they are not surprised by the political tilt. "The fact is that most conservatives, most Republicans don't worship at the altar in New York, and I think that aggravates them more than anything else," said John R. Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. "What they want is the bending of the knee, and they'll get it from an Obama administration."

How Republicans Work for Idaho

In a season where Republicans and Democrats don’t agree on much, there are two issues where we do: voters face an important choice in November; and there are real differences between the two major parties.

For many years now, Idaho voters have overwhelmingly and repeatedly chosen the Republican Party as the party that represents their views and interests, both in Boise and Washington, D.C. Here are some reasons why.

The root issue is the similarity between Idahoans’ beliefs and the Republican philosophy – that individuals are the most efficient, dynamic and creative element in our society, not government. Private citizens are more effective at creating jobs, managing money and solving problems than government bureaucrats. While government can and should play a role in the lives of Americans, that role ought to be limited.

Everything a government does springs from a healthy and prosperous economy. Our national defense is paid for by taxpayers. The money to build safe roads and good schools comes from your pocket. When the government intrudes too much into the private sector with excessive regulations or burdensome taxes, it not only hurts the economy, it hurts government revenue and services, too.

With excessive government intervention, Idaho’s and America’s employers are often forced into hard choices: to pay taxes instead of hiring a new worker; to pay for an attorney to help them comply with new rules and regulations instead of providing health insurance; to pay the second-highest corporate tax rates in the world (as they do in the United States) or to relocate to a country where they are lower. When government demands too much, these things happen, and everybody loses.

Many of the things Democrats talk about in this election fall into that “excessive and burdensome” category. When Democrats promise a new program or increased spending, remember where they’re going to get the money to pay for it – your pocket. This is emblematic of the Democrats’ top-down, we-know-what’s-best-for-you philosophy. They want to tax you so they can spend your money, instead of you.

Recently, Jim Hansen, Executive Director of the Idaho Democrats, wrote that “Idaho needs to catch up with the rest of the West,” and elect more Democrats. Mr. Hansen, Idaho voters are plenty capable of deciding for themselves who they want to vote for, and they won’t stand for your patronizing attitude, based on a false stereotype that Idahoans are backward people.

Idahoans had enough of Democrat leadership under Bill Clinton. They saw the way he treated our military, our veterans, Idaho’s public lands and our water.

In contrast, Idaho Republicans believe the government closest to the people performs the best. We know supporting the Second Amendment isn’t just about hunting or posing with a shotgun. Strange how Democrats frequently forget that firearms are also important to self-defense.

Idaho Republicans understand that America’s dependence on foreign oil is a national security issue. We support an approach to energy production described as “all of the above.” Wind, solar power, hydrogen and other renewables are the fuels of the future. But that future isn’t quite here yet, so we need to use readily available forms of energy until then, like oil and natural gas reserves on the Outer Continental Shelf, hydropower and nuclear power. Republicans also understand that raising taxes on oil and gas will raise the price of a gallon of gas, not lower it.

Idaho Republicans have brought companies like Areva to the state, which means hundreds of jobs that will pay more than just a living wage. Republicans understand that in order for our economy to grow and create jobs, we need lower taxes, not higher. Republicans in our legislature created the rainy day funds to prevent recessions from gutting education funding.

Idaho’s Republicans, whether serving in the courthouse, the statehouse, or on Capitol Hill, have brought commonsense solutions to the challenges facing us all. That’s why Idaho has become the reddest of the red states.

Chairman's Corner: Plan Now for November 4

TAKING THE DAY OFF: PLAN NOW FOR NOVEMBER 4

Republican Friends,

With 13 days to go until the November 4 election, now is the time to make plans to take the day off -- from work, that is -- and lend a hand to GOP election day volunteer efforts all across Idaho.

You can play a critical part in our GOP election day efforts by volunteering to be a poll watcher, a sign waver, help candidates pass out literature, or even make phone calls on election day to turn out Republican voters. Just check with your Republican County or Legislative District Chair to find out what needs to be done. Even a half day off from work can make a big difference.

If the need is not as great in your area, just let us know and we would be happy to help plug you in somewhere else where help is needed. We've got some critical races that require all the help we can get.

As Precinct Committee chairs and dedicated Republican supporters, you are key to our election day efforts. Please make plans now to take the day off from work to help make that happen.

Thanks for all that you do for the Republican Party and our candidates.

Voter Fraud Task Force Raids Nevada Office

I thought you should see this story.

http://washtimes.com/news/2008/oct/08/voter-fraud-task-force-raids-nevada-office-backing/

Perhaps Barack Obama will find it in his conscience to condemn the voter fraud habitually perpetrated by ACORN. But since he has longstanding ties to the group, dating back to his days as a ‘community organizer,’ I’m not holding my breath. They’re key to his campaign strategy of registering new voters at any cost, whether those voters exist or not. Barack Obama poses as an agent of change, but repeatedly demonstrates he’s an unapologetic product of the old-style, corrupt Chicago politics. Barack Obama just talks about change. John McCain has a track record of bringing real change.

Yet Another Poll Showing Sali in the Lead

Greetings Idaho Republicans!

Despite Democrat Walt Minnick’s best efforts, Idaho voters haven’t been fooled by his expensive efforts at repackaging. Walt Minnick is not a conservative, and he most certainly is not a Republican. He’s been a Democrat for a long time, and he still supports liberal Democrat causes.

I thought you might like the numbers from a recent poll, showing Bill Sali firmly in the lead over Walt Minnick. Several other polls have shown Sali with a solid, double-digit lead over Democrat Minnick, and this just reinforces those reports. Enjoy!

GREG SMITH & ASSOCIATES POLL SHOWS SALI AHEAD OF MINNICK (51%-39%) IN 1ST DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL RACE

Greg Smith & Associates is releasing the results of a just completed poll among likely Idaho 1st Congressional District voters. In summary, the results show that Republican Congressman Bill Sali is leading Democrat Walt Minnick by 12 points (51%-39%), and appears well positioned to win re-election. The poll was conducted among 200 likely voters on Sept. 25, 26, 29 and 30, was commissioned by the Idaho Republican Party, and the results are well outside of the margin of error.

Smith commented, “I expected a closer result at this stage, if for no other reason than the fact that Minnick has dominated the airwaves for some time, and has buttressed his efforts with ‘negative’ advertising in recent weeks. That suggests that most 1st Congressional District voters strongly support Sali given they share the same views and ideals he has.”

The poll was conducted as Congress debated the high profile $700+ billion Wall Street bailout. A recent poll also conducted by Greg Smith & Associates found that 58 percent of Idahoans disagreed with a bailout package similar to what failed, and what Sali voted against.

Smith added, “The data also suggest that Minnick’s negative campaign has appeared ineffective, as Sali’s support appears to be solidifying over time.”

“My impression is that Sali has received a lot of attention for his stand against the bailout. To that end, voter attitudes toward Bill have certainly been affected,” said Smith. “However, the overall results of this poll are certainly consistent with other polling, including the one conducted by Research 2000 for the liberal Daily Kos blog which showed Sali with a virtually identical 11% lead -– certainly not a site of support for Sali.”

New David Zucker Film Takes on the Liberals in Hollywood

David Zucker, creator of several comedic classics like “Airplane” and "The Naked Gun" series, has recently completed his new film, An American Carol. This film takes on the liberals in Hollywood, as well as Michael Moore and the ACLU. Finally, a movie with a fresh perspective on politics! It is a great change of pace after listening to the liberal media relentlessly attack Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin over the last month. We’d like to make this a National Night at the Movies for all Republicans. If we all commit to attending the film on opening weekend, it will garner great media attention!

The film opens tomorrow, October 3rd and we would love to see this movie sell out in the Treasure Valley! Please plan on bringing your friends and family to support one of the few conservative films in Hollywood! Don’t miss it!

IDAHO PROUD TO HOST NATIONAL GOP CHIEF

Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan to visit the Gem State on Tuesday

We've all heard it. Some of us may have even thought it ourselves: The notion that prominent national Republicans routinely bypass Idaho during the general election season in favor of larger "battleground" states. It turns out that isn't exactly true. . .

We are proud to announce that Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan will be visiting with Idaho Republicans on Tuesday, September 30, to fire up the troops and thank them for all of their hard work.

Chairman Duncan will help cut the ribbon at the new Ada County Republican Headquarters, address BSU and NNU College Republicans, and meet with local GOP candidates. He is also scheduled to visit with Governor Otter, as well as Lt. Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Jim Risch.

I am privileged to accompany Chairman Duncan during his visit and to introduce him at each of the scheduled events.

I had the good fortune of meeting Chairman Duncan during the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul earlier this month. I mentioned to him that my first job out of college was at the Republican National Committee, working on the 1988 Presidential campaign. He was pleasantly surprised and sincere in thanking me for my continued involvement with the Republican Party. That -- along with a lot of other things that happened at the National Convention -- made me feel pretty good about being a Republican.

Chairman Duncan is a gentlemen and a true leader. I am thrilled that we have this unique opportunity to host him.
Fellow Idaho Republicans, let's show Chairman Duncan how Idaho Republicans are leading the way yet again this year as the reddest of the red states!

Look for the details of Chairman Duncan's Tuesday schedule at www.idgop.org or give us a call at 343-6405.

I hope you can join us.

Biden's Tax Returns Show Little Charitable Giving

Came across this article, thought it was interesting.
Biden's Tax Returns Show Little Charitable Giving

Paul Caron wonders if the release of Sen. Joe Biden's tax returns "might backfire because the returns show that the Bidens have been amazingly tight-fisted when it comes to their charitable giving. Despite income ranging from $210,432 - $321,379 over the ten-year period, the Bidens have given only $120 - $995 per year to charity, which amounts to 0.06% - 0.31% of their income.""This giving compares very unfavorably to John McCain, whose tax returns show that he gave 27.3% - 28.6% of his income to charity in 2006-2007. During the same period, the Obamas' tax returns show that they gave 5.8% - 6.1% of their income to charity."Independent Sector reports that 89% of American households contribute to charity, with an average contribution of $1,620 -- 3.1% of income.

Palin Powers McCain to 39 Point Idaho Lead; Risch Solidly Up by 28

It turns out that my initial excitement about Senator John McCain's nomination of Alaska Governor -- and Idaho native -- Sarah Palin was well founded. After the success of last week's Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, maybe that is no big surprise. But it is good to know that my political instincts were correct. Palin's influence has been palpable.

The wise judgment that Senator McCain showed by picking Palin is also apparent. Rasmussen's just-released Idaho poll reports a 39 point lead (68-29) for the McCain-Palin ticket over Obama-Biden. Even by Idaho's "reddest-of-the-red states" standard, these numbers are staggering.

Democrats, particularly in Idaho, have no answer to the political phenomenon known simply as "Palin Power". Young, energetic, intelligent, authentic, a Westerner, and genuinely conservative, Governor Palin has injected a new level of excitement into races up and down the ballot. Look no further than the U.S. Senate race, where Lt. Governor Jim Risch is now out to a solid 28 point lead over Larry LaRocco in the Rasmussen telephone survey, thanks to his hard work and consistently conservative philosophy, coupled with the new found momentum of the national ticket. Risch's current lead (58-30) is almost ten points higher than the huge margin that Risch beat LaRocco by just two years ago for Lt. Governor. Just more bad news for Idaho Democrats.

Congressmen Sali and Simspon, and all Idaho Republican candidates, who are working hard to communicate their GOP message to the voters -- and there is still much hard work ahead for all of us in the next eight weeks to ensure a Republican victory -- are sure to benefit from Palin's coattails on November 4, helping lead Idaho Republicans to victory.

Ever since Governor Palin gave her home-run acceptance speech -- and what an experience it was for us Idaho delegates to be in the Convention hall for that moment -- the phones at Idaho GOP headquarters have been ringing off the hook with requests for McCain-Palin bumper stickers, buttons, signs and other political goodies.

All we can say folks is to please be patient. We're doing the best we can to keep up! Demand for Governor Palin is sky high all across America, and, as usual, Idaho Republicans are leading the way.

I welcome your thoughts.

Urgent Message From Idaho Republican Headquarters

It has come to our attention that Walt Minnick is contacting Republican State Legislators and asking them to support his candidacy. Needless to say, this desperate ploy must be rejected.
While Mr. Minnick may be ashamed to be a Democrat, he is most definitely not a Republican. Let’s review some of the positions that Mr. Minnick has taken:
· Gun control: Walt Minnick has said that he supports the Brady Bill.
· Universal health care: Walt Minnick has stated that he supports universal health care.
· Power and Water supplies: Walt Minnick has supported severe draw downs of federal reservoirs, thereby jeopardizing electrical power and water supplies
Gun control; universal health care; radical environmental positions that rob us of needed energy and water supplies. These are not Republican principles and they are definitely not good for Idaho; these are liberal, Democrat positions – just like Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy – best suited for San Francisco and Massachusetts.
In contrast, Congressman Bill Sali has brought an Idaho style of strong, principled leadership to Congress with him. He has been recognized as President of his class by fellow Republicans and has received numerous awards and other recognitions of his accomplishments for Idaho.
As we were all reminded recently by former Senators Jim McClure and Steve Symms, it is critical that we retain control of Idaho’s 1st Congressional District seat. Four years of Larry LaRocco in the early 90’s and 24-years of Democrat Governors in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s should serve to remind us all what happens when the Democrats gain a toe-hold. We simply cannot allow this to happen. Please do all you can to help us remain vigilant in this task.
Thank you for all that you do, and please let us know if there is anything we can do to be of assistance.

Idaho Native, Graduate Tapped for GOP Vice Presidential Nomination

Idaho Native, Graduate Tapped for GOP Vice Presidential Nomination
What an exciting day to be an Idaho Republican, and what a great way to kick off our new blog!
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a Sandpoint native and University of Idaho graduate, has been named as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate by Senator John McCain.

Just minutes after hearing the news, I received a call from Dee Sarton with Channel 7 news in Boise. She asked how I was doing and my immediate response was "ecstatic". That has been my response all day. I've got an extra hitch in my giddy-up as I head to Minneapolis for the Republican National Convention with my fellow Idaho delegates.

Governor Palin is a young, smart, energetic and well-spoken, rock solid conservative -- and a Westerner with Idaho roots. What more can Idahoans ask for in a Vice Presidential candidate?
From the national perspective, this is a bold, strategic masterpiece. I'm pretty sure the Obama camp never saw this one coming; certainly not Idaho Democrats.

Does the Obama camp dare attack Governor Palin - a historic choice as the GOP's first female nominee? How would Hillary supporters react to that?
Obama also has some serious competition in the battle to attract America's youth to the political scene. And I don't think Joe Biden helps his cause.

Can there be any doubt as to which candidate -- McCain or Obama -- is the deeper and more strategic thinker and decisionmaker?

And how discouraged must Idaho Democrats be? Obama passed up his Western options for VP and Delaware is a long way from Idaho. McCain's choice has ignited a new fire in Idaho Republicans that is sure to carry over to all of the other races on the November 4 ballot. That is bad news for Idaho Democrats.

As you can tell, I am genuinely excited about this pick. Governor Palin and I attended the University of Idaho together in the 1980's (she graduated in 1987 and I graduated in 1988). She is also from the same part of Idaho that I grew up in. And, as I indicated before, she is a true conservative.

I can't help but feel a great deal of pride as our generation -- the youngest that was able to vote for Ronald Reagan -- now steps up to take its turn at the wheel, a new generation of conservative leadership.
I look forward to your thoughts on this historic day for Republicans in Idaho and across the Nation.
